Reaching Out and Lifting Up
Reaching Out and Lifting Up
The Bible is the highest doctrinal authority for Restoration Church. The following biblical beliefs serve as our confession of faith.
1. We believe in the authority of the bible for all of life…
We believe the Bible, as originally given, to be without error, the fully inspired and infallible Word of God and the supreme and final authority in all matters of faith and conduct. The bible reveals to us Jesus Christ and God’s ethical standards by which the human race is to live (1). Therefore, we seek to live by God’s standards alone and apply these standards to every area of life and thought. Because God is a loving Father who speaks, we also seek to hear from Him and test everything by the Word of God.
2. We believe in God the Holy Trinity…
We believe there is only one true God, who eternally exists as a Trinity of equally divine persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (2). Each person of the Trinity acts, speaks, and relates, whilst being united in one will, because each is a person and not an impersonal force. Each member of the Trinity is equally God, sharing all the divine attributes (3). They are one God, sovereign in creation, providence, and redemption.
3. We believe that God created everything…
We believe that God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing, and lovingly prepared them as a home in which to worship and enjoy Him (4). Everything in creation and history is dependent upon God and is only good when functioning according to his good intentions revealed in Scripture. God, the author and subject of history, will bring history to an end, completing his work of redemption by establishing a new heaven and a new earth (5). Because God is our Creator, we worship Him alone and enjoy his creation gladly.
4. We believe that God created mankind as the pinnacle of His creation…
We believe that God created man in His own image. In love He created them as male and female, equal in dignity, value, and worth, to mirror and reflect God as an act of worship and obedience. We believe that human beings, as God’s sole image bearers, are under God and over lower creation, not to be elevated like gods or demoted like animals (6). We believe that human life begins at conception and that an unborn baby is an image-bearer of God (7). We believe that God created marriage solely for one man and one woman, and created sex only for married couples (8). Because God created human life and marriage, we value the sanctity of life and godly marriage.
5. We believe in the Fall of the human race and creation….
Though God created this world in a perfect state, the first human beings sinned (9). In Eden, Satan tempted Eve to mistrust God’s word, and she was deceived (10). The sin committed by Adam, also called “original sin,” has been imputed to all human beings except Jesus Christ (11). Therefore, we believe that all human beings are universally sinful by both nature and choice, since the fall, leaving them subject to God’s wrath and condemnation, resulting in death (12). As a result, we now live in fallen world, awaiting its restoration.
6. We Believe in the Eternal State of heaven and hell…
We believe that all human beings live forever, in eternity, and when our life on earth ends, we will go to heaven or hell, depending on how we have lived (13). No one is capable, in and of themselves, of living a life good enough to earn heaven, for it is accomplished through Christ’s work alone (14). All those who trust in Christ and live for God will inherit heaven and live in the eternal conscious bliss of the righteous, whilst those who are far from God and pursue a lifestyle of sin will inherit hell and live in the eternal conscious punishment of the wicked (15).
7. We believe in the Saviour, Jesus Christ, His real humanity and authoritative teaching…
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Saviour of the world. He is the eternal Son of God and second person of the Trinity who became flesh, adding humanity to his divinity, and entered into human history as the God-Man, Jesus Christ (16). Jesus alone is one person with two natures, fully God and fully man. Jesus Christ is the Word, or Logos, of God because he is the personal, eternally existing Creator of the universe, distinct from, yet equal with the Father and Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ was miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem to redeem sinful man as the only mediator between God and man (17). We believe that Jesus Christ, during the Incarnation, laid aside His status as God and submitted to the Father’s will, living a sinless life by the Power of the Holy Spirit (18). Because He is both our Saviour and example, we deeply love Jesus Christ and seek to live with and like Him by the power of the Holy Spirit.
8. We believe salvation is only possible through Christ alone….
We believe that Jesus Christ lived a perfectly righteous and sinless life, died in the place of sinners, fully absorbing the wrath of God, paying the just penalty for their sins and reconciling them to God (19). As our substitute and atoning sacrifice on the cross, Jesus Christ suffered and died in our place to forgive us, love us, cleanse us, and embrace us as the punishment for our sins was diverted from us to Jesus (20). We believe that Jesus Christ, after dying on the cross, arose bodily from the grave on the third day, appearing to many witnesses and proving that he was physically alive (21). Through faith we are united with the risen Christ, raised with Christ, and granted the same Holy Spirit power that raised Christ (22). The benefits of Jesus’ resurrection include the forgiveness of sins, justification, sanctification, and ultimately glorification (23).
9. We believe that faith and repentance are necessary for salvation…
We believe in the necessity of repentance towards God and faith in the Jesus Christ for the receiving of salvation, by which the sinner is pardoned and accepted as righteous in God’s sight, through the atoning work of Christ. This is called Justification and it’s only possible through the work of Jesus Christ - by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone (25). His righteousness is imparted to us at the time of saving faith, simultaneous with our justification, and brings us new life by the Holy Spirit, who regenerates us with a new nature and begins sanctifying us to become increasingly more like Jesus (26). Because Jesus is alive forever, we confidently trust that one day we will likewise rise from our grave to live together as God’s people with Him forever.
10. We believe in the person and presence of the Holy Spirit….
We believe in the Holy Spirit who proceeds from the Father and the Son, and the necessity of His work in convicting the world of sin and bringing about regeneration, repentance, and sanctification in those who trusts in Jesus (27). We believe in the promised enduement of power as the gift of Christ through the baptism in the Holy Spirit with signs following. Through this charismatic enduement, the believer is empowered for fuller participation in the ministry of the Church, its worship, evangelism and service. Therefore, we are charismatic church who believe in the present operation of spiritual gifts, signs and wonders, according to the New Testament (28).
11. We believe in the Church and its Mission….
We believe that the empowering work of the Holy Spirit is part of God’s equipping, mobilising and sending of His church, individually and corporately to extend his kingdom throughout the earth. This is achieved through the local church, priesthood of all believers in Christ, and the functioning of the ministries that Christ has set for His Church, namely, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors (29). We believe that the local church is a community of regenerated believers who confess Jesus Christ as Lord, and that the universal church is comprised of all God’s people in all times and places (30). In obedience to Scripture, Christians gather together regularly under qualified leadership and scatter to fulfil the great commission as missionaries to the world (31). Because we are members of God’s universal church, we partner with other Christian churches and ministries to fulfil this end.
12. We believe in the Sacraments of the Church, as given by God…
We believe in the sacraments of the church, as signs and seals of God’s promises towards His people. They were immediately instituted by God to strengthen our faith and unite us to Jesus Christ (32). The grace received through the sacraments is not given by any power in and of themselves, neither does it depend on the works of the believer, but solely upon the work of the Spirit and the ministry of the Word (33). We believe in the baptism of believers in water in obedience to the command of Jesus Christ and the observance of the Lord’s Supper until His return.
13. We believe in the Great Commission…
We believe that the Gospel embraces the needs of the whole man and that the Church is commissioned by Christ to preach the gospel to the world and disciple every nation on earth. We believe that the church is to fulfil the ministry of healing and deliverance to the spiritual and physical needs of mankind, whilst it works towards discipling whole nations to God (34). We believe that the Great Commission will be fulfilled and that all nations will be discipled prior to the return of Jesus Christ (35).
14. We believe in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ…
We believe in the personal, physical, and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ at the close of world history. We believe that Christ will return to judge the world and complete His work of restoration, raising the dead to life, defeating death forever and making all things new (36). There will be no longer any pain, suffering or mourning, but righteousness, justice and liberty will abound forever, as the earth is filled with the knowledge of the glory of God (37).
15. We believe in the Eternal Future State…
We believe in the resurrection of the dead and in the final judgement of the world, as Christ judges the righteous and the wicked. All those who have trusted in Christ and lived for God will be raised and, after being judged as faithful, will inherit, and forever inhabit the New Heaven and the New Earth. Those who have pursued a lifestyle of sin and selfishness, having lived a life far from God, will be raised and, after being judged and condemned, will forever live in the eternal conscious punishment (38).
